Medications/Supplements To Stop Taking Prior to the Surgery and Timeline

(Please talk to your primary care physician/cardiologist for further confirmation)

 

  • Anticoagulants

    • Aspirin, Plavix, Aggrenox: stop 7 days prior to the surgery day

      • Stay on aspirin if you had carotid endarterectomies or if your cardiologist recommends

    • Coumadin & Arixtra SQ: Stop 5-7 days prior

    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Aleve, Ibuprofen, Diclofenac): Stop 5-7days prior

    • Xarelto, Pradaxa, Eliquis: Stop 3 days prior

    • Pleta, Elmiron, Persantine: Stop 3 days prior

    • Lovenox: Stop 24 hours prior

    • Heparin: Hold day of surgery

  • Vitamins/Herbal supplements: stop 7-10 days prior

    • Including CBD Oil, Echinacea, Ephedra, Garlic, Ginkgo, Ginseng, Kava, St. Johns’ wort, Valerian, Vitamin E

  • Diabetes medications: please talk to your primary care physician or endocrinologist

    • Jardiance: Stop 72 hours prior

    • Ozempic or Wagovy or any GLP-agonist: stop 1 day before if you take it daily or week before if you take it weekly

  • Antirheumatic medications

    • Methotrexate, sulfasalazine, hydroxychloroquine, leflunomide, doxycycline, mycophenolate mofetil, azathioprine, tacrolimus: CONTINUE (don’t have to stop)

    • BIOLOGICS: please talk to your PCP or rheumatologist

  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Anti-Depressants and most Anti-Parkinson Drugs): talk to your PCP

    • Tranylcypromine, phenelzine, isocarboxazid, rasagiline, selegiline, linezolid, St. John’s Wort: Stop 2 weeks prior

  • You CAN CONTINUE taking Tylenol, Celebrex, Ultracet, Ultram, Iron Supplements
